The materials read as rock, coral, seed pod and glass at once.\n\nBosch gives this architecture the logic of plants. Towers bud, split and fruit, and each one shelters tiny figures the way a hollow fruit shelters a worm. One reading is that the garden is a world without builders: nothing here was made by work, so nothing here obeys a carpenter's rules.\n\nZoom into the pink tower on the left and find the man climbing through the broken wall, and the small crowd on the sloping ledge below the cylinder."

One reading pairs the key with the horse's skull and the bell hanging below as a set of hollow, dead things that once had a use. Nothing in this corner of hell does what it was made for.\n\nLook at the key's bit, the toothed end at the bottom. It is cut as a neat, functional pattern, and the shaft is hollow, as late medieval keys often were."

What he is about to sign is not written out, which is the point. The scene is often read as a man being coaxed into a contract he will regret, with the sealed sheet standing for any bargain made in bad faith, whether a will, a mortgage or a purchased pardon.\n\nZoom into the seals. Beside them an armoured creature with a severed foot hanging from a hook on its helmet carries a quill and an ink pot.\n\nThe pig in a habit is Bosch's bluntest joke about the clergy, and the kiss is a seduction. A common reading is that the man is being talked into signing something, and that the pig's affection ends the moment he does. Whether the deal is with a corrupt church or with the devil, the result is the same corner of hell.\n\nThe man's toes press into the ground as if he were bracing to stand. An owl at the centre of paradise, on the first day Adam and Eve meet, is often read as a quiet warning that the fall is already waiting. Owls appear in many of Bosch's paintings, so often that the owl is sometimes called his signature bird.\n\nZoom in on the eyes. A proverb of the period compared happiness to glass, which breaks as soon as it is made, and the crack in the sphere is often read that way. The man's hand on the woman's belly and the rat in the tube add a note of lust and decay.\n\nZoom into the surface of the bubble. The unicorn was a real animal to most readers of the time, listed in bestiaries beside the lion.\n\nThe elephant's trunk curls toward the pool as if it were about to drink. One reading is that these are the people who sang in the garden, now hearing their own music played on themselves.\n\nZoom into the hurdy-gurdy. Everywhere people eat giant fruit, climb into hollow seed pods, hide in shells and talk to birds the size of houses.\n\nNobody is old, nobody is clothed, nobody works. There is no cold, no darkness, no church and no king. What the panel means has been argued about for five centuries. The oldest reading is a sermon: this is the world given over to lust, the sin that leads to the hell on the right. A later reading, now mostly rejected, saw it as a heretical sect's vision of innocent love. A third view treats it as an imagined Eden continued, the world as it might have been if the fall had not happened.\n\nWhichever reading you prefer, the panel rewards slow looking. Start at the bottom, where the figures are largest, and move up. Every group tells a small story, and most of them are funnier than they first appear."

"text": "The lake at the centre of hell has frozen over. A naked man skates across it on a single blade, pushing a hull-shaped sled. Behind him a second figure skates away with arms out for balance. A bird-headed creature in a cloak and skates glides past with a stick, and in the water below the ice a man clings to a sinking boat.\n\nHell is usually fire, but a frozen hell has deep roots: Dante's lowest circle is ice, and a Dutch winter supplied the image. Skating was a pastime of the Low Countries, and here it has become the mock-pastime of the damned, who never reach a bank.\n\nLook at the sled under the skater's hands. It is built like a tiny boat with an awning frame, exactly the kind of ice yacht used on frozen canals."

One man beside the pit vomits into it, and another drops coins from his backside. \n\nThis is the prince of hell, and his throne is a commode. Bosch builds the whole corner on digestion: sins go in at the mouth and out the other end. The miser pays with coins, the glutton with his body. One reading of the blue pot on the bird's head is a cooking pot, which turns the throne into a kitchen.\n\nZoom into the bubble behind the throne. Two tiny figures float inside it, one with a hand on the other's shoulder."

A small figure of God sits in the upper corner with a book, and a line from Psalm 33 runs across the top of the two panels. Open them, and colour floods in.\n\nThat sequence is the painting's argument. Creation, then Eden, then the garden, then hell, read from the outside in and from left to right. The three panels share one horizon and one light until the dark panel breaks both. The oak boards of the panels have been dated by tree-ring analysis, and together with the style this places the work around 1490 to 1510. It belonged to the Nassau family in Brussels by 1517, passed into Spanish royal hands later in the century and has been in the Prado since 1939.\n\nThe painting has outlived every explanation offered for it. Preachers saw a warning, a 20th-century scholar saw a heretical sect, and surrealists saw a dream. The figures keep eating their fruit regardless. If you have followed the markers this far, go back to the bottom of the centre panel and find the one man who wears clothes. He is looking at you."

Nearby a deer grazes, a man lies stretched out on the lawn as if swimming, and three figures sit together under the trees.\n\nEggs are birth, and the garden is full of them: closed, cracked and hollow. In the 1940s the German scholar Wilhelm Fraenger argued that the whole triptych was painted for a secret sect, the Adamites, who believed in a sinless, naked love, and that scenes like this showed their rites. His theory was widely read and is now rejected by most historians; there is no evidence that such a sect commissioned the work. The egg remains, and it still looks like a beginning.\n\nLook at the crack in the shell. It is painted as a dark jagged line with a thin highlight along each edge."

Another is simpler: in the garden every creature has crossed into another, and a knight who is half fish is no stranger than a bird that is half house.\n\nZoom in on the merman's armour. He married a woman from a wealthy family, joined the Brotherhood of Our Lady, a religious confraternity attached to the town's great church, and died in 1516. That is nearly all the records say.\n\nNo drawing, letter or contract explains what he thought his paintings meant. What survives is a small group of panels, perhaps two dozen, that no one else could have made: hells crowded with hybrid devils, saints tempted by things with legs, and this garden. His name was known in Spain and Italy within a few years of his death, and copies of his work were in demand for a century afterwards.\n\nThe painting you are looking at is his largest surviving work. "text": "A pair of giant ears, pierced by an arrow, sits like a war machine in the upper left of hell, with the blade of a knife jutting out between them. A small dark demon clings to the inner ear with a spear, and naked figures lie crushed underneath. A burning building and a ladder stand behind. The knife bears a small mark on its blade, a letter close to an M.\n\nThe ears hear nothing and the knife cuts anything. One reading sees a war machine, a siege engine built from senses. Another reads the ears as deafness to the word of God, the arrow as the sin that enters through hearing. The mark on the blade has been linked to the stamps of knife makers in 's-Hertogenbosch, a town known for its cutlery, so the knife may be a local product.\n\nZoom into the ear's curve. Bosch painted the folds of the cartilage with the care of a portrait."
